Kat Von D: Putting The Art in Makeup

The artist turned entrepreneur who is taking over the makeup world.

Kat Von D, originally a tattooist, has taken makeup fans and enthusiasts by storm; her palettes sell out within seconds. Her website is a hub for enthusiasts looking for inspirations; “How To-s” and “Kat’s Beauty Chat” videos feature artists who look at makeup as a form of art and self-expression.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner

  1. What are your first impressions of the Middle Eastern makeup scene?

I can definitely identify with the Middle Eastern makeup scene, since from a very early start I have always been a fan of a smokey eye, a strong brow and a bold lip. It’s so refreshing seeing a community of beauty-lovers who appreciate full coverage as much as I do.

Screen-Shot-2016-04-11-at-3.02.03-PM

  1. Coming from a tattooist background, what difficulties did you find in the makeup industry?

Coming from an artist background—whether it be tattooing, drawing, or painting—I find that it really does translate into how I personally do my own makeup and how I approach creating new products. Understanding art fundamentals truly lends itself to makeup application, and for that I am grateful. So in all honesty, my background does not present itself to be a challenge in any way.beauty-products-makeup-tools-kat-von-d-lipstick-volumizing-mascara-beautyblender-makeup-tools-2015-09-16

  1. How do you make your products stand out from other brands?

I think Kat Von D Beauty stands out from other brands in many ways. Of course, our patented formulas are game changers, but I think the overall, unapologetic sentiment of the brand really sets us apart. There are so many special and unique shades in every collection that really “think outside the box.” Who wants to play with the same old makeup anyway?

  1. What’s your favorite product from your latest collection?

Tattoo Liner is definitely my go-to eyeliner — not one day goes by where I don’t wear it!

The Reality of the Fast and Furious Life of Jeddah

Eyad Shawli, putting the “s for safety” in speed.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a partner at Al Shawli Real Estate Developers, an entrepreneur, a financial and money market investor and I’m crazy about super motors.

What started your interest in super motors?

My older brother, Eihab, also a super motor enthusiast, bought me my first bike – a dirt bike. That was the turning point. I am thankful to him.

IMG_6490What Jeddah clubs have you joined?

The RedRiders Jeddah Club; we’re about 30 members. We ride every Friday/Saturday morning and we travel abroad for tracks: Dubai, Qatar and Bahrain mostly. A few months back, we traveled to Mugello, Italy for the Ducati Racing Experience (DRE). There’s also the Motorcross group – it’s essentially dirt biking, an adrenaline-rush adventure full of stunting in the dunes. There is also the well-organized Harley Davidson group.

IMG_6489For cars, my brother and I are fortunate to own Ferraris, so we joined the Ferrari Owners Club, which was officialized by Italy HQ recently. There is also the newly established Supercars Club Jeddah, which any supercar owner can join – perfect for meeting other enthusiasts.

IMG_4132Are the groups open to everyone?

Yes, but we have strict rules and regulations; we have high standards for the riding style and protective gear.

(1116)What are the benefits of joining clubs?

They’re great for networking; you meet a lot of important people, different nationalities, professions, etc.

IMG_6751What advice would you give to other riders?

If you are fortunate and able to go abroad for tracks, put all your energy into doing that. Don’t take it to the streets. We all know someone who has been affected by an accident; it’s tragic. Think of your family; there is no need to be reckless for the thrill of a few seconds. If you spend a little extra on protective gear, it is worth it.

IMG_9451What would you like to see improve?

  • Transparent driving rules; the Dos and Don’ts.

  • Tracks and circuits – I would personally invest in a motorbike school. We drive safely in small groups and buy all the expensive protective gear, but it is still safer to fall at a track or circuit, than on the roads with pedestrians and cars.

  • Protective gear here is not the best quality. If we had a track, it would encourage investments, making it easier to find necessary accessories.

P4S_0288-(2)“Riders must wear helmets, gloves, boots and full leather suits. There are many different brands but I recommend Alpinestars and Dianesse for leather suits and AGV, Bell and Arai for helmets. You can find them online at revzilla.com.” – Eyad Shawli

Deadpool Film Review

Hilariously crude – it’s a must watch.

R- rated (Not particularly suitable for children)

Starring:

  • Ryan Reynolds  – “ The Hero” aka Wade Wilson aka Deadpool
  • Morena Baccarin – aka Vanessa. You might recognize her from Gotham.
  • Ed Skrein – aka “The villain”

In case you happen to be one of the people who don’t keep track of Marvel’s endeavors, here is the official Deadpool trailer.

Note: You will need to sign into your YouTube account to watch the trailer, as it’s not suitable for children.

I’m a huge fan of Marvel Entertainment; I’ve dedicated time to watching every film and catching up on series. I loved Deadpool in X-men Origins: Wolverine and l was over the moon when word got out that they were giving him his very own film.

Released in Feb 2016, it is the highest grossing R- Rated film of all time, exceeding everyone’s expectations. Humor, adult language, action sequences and the featured X-men characters combined; make this film worth every second of watching time.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!

The film follows the story of Wade Wilson, who discovers he is dying of cancer and is consequently approached by a mysterious man – backed by Ajax, who offers him a way out. The way out being an experiment ends up giving him superpowers, but taking away his exceedingly good looks.

If you fell in love with chatty not-able-to-shut-up Deadpool in X-men Origins: Wolverine, you will fall even more deeply in love with him or end up hating his obnoxious guts in this film.

Film Nags:

  1. I didn’t really appreciate the fully CGI-ed Collosus; I found him fake and annoying; basically I wasn’t really into his scenes.
  2. In X-men Origins: Wolverine, Wade was already Deadpool in our present time. So it was a bit confusing to see his story begin in the present time too.

Film Favorites:

  1. Cab driver Dopinder, played byKaran Soniwas probably one of my most enjoyable characters. His innocence and then subsequent attempt at being badass was highly amusing to watch.

Surat Al Kahf: An example of Allah’s offer of protection

Throughout our childhoods, our families, friends and teachers have always reminded us to read Surat Al Kahf – the 18th surat in the Quran- every Friday. Most of us already know why we do this Alhamdulillah, however it’s always worth a small reminder.

What makes the recitation of Surat Al Kahf important to us, as Muslims?

It was revealed in Mecca before Hijra, at a time when the Prophet SAW and his sahaba, were being prosecuted. It explores the theme of Allah’s protection for those who firmly believe in him and wholeheartedly accept Islam is their way of life, in the form of storytelling.

A test of Faith (Ayahs 9 – 26):
‘Al Kahf’ translates to the cave; which relays the story of the people of the cave ‘Ashab Al Kahf’. They believed in Allah, and were consequently ridiculed and prosecuted by their people. They fled and Allah protected them by putting them to sleep.Their iman in Allah was reaffirmed and they found that the people had accepted their faith too.
A test of Wealth (Ayahs 32 – 44):
The second story narrates the story of two men: one poor and one blessed with riches. The rich man boasts of his wealth and believes that is an everlasting blessing. One day, his gardens are ruined and it dawns upon him that he should have felt gratitude towards Allah for his blessings.
A test of Knowledge and Patience (Ayahs 60 – 82):
The third story is of Prophet Musa and Al Khidr; a person who was blessed with knowledge from Allah SWT. Prophet Musa asks Al Khidr to allow him to follow him on his path in life. Along the way, Musa questions Al Khidr’s decisions and actions, without patience.
A test of Power (Ayahs 83 – 98):
The final and fourth story is of that of Dhul Qarnayan and Yaajooj and Majooj ‘ Gog and Magog’. This story was revealed after the Jews suggested to people to ask the Prophet about the man who travelled from the east to the west, in order to confirm the Prophet’s truth in regards to him being a prophet sent by Allah.

Career Fairs: Why They Are Important And How To Prepare For Them

Career fairs: Why are they important?

I’m sure many of us go through our student life, thinking about careers. I mean that is the whole point of studying; we’re trying to reach an end goal. You want to be able to stand proudly and say I graduated with this bachelors/masters or PhD. Your family want to place a graduation picture on their mantle and let everyone who comes by the house know that this is their child, who they are so proud of. The question we forget to ask amidst all of this is: are we happy with our choices? This is where career fairs come in extremely handy.

  • Career fairs allow you to see what is out there in the big world. What could you be doing, what you could possibly do in the future and these options have not necessarily crossed your mind. For example, I’ve known people who wanted to study medicine, they were so sure about this all through secondary year, only to decide last minute after visiting a career fair.. Hold on, I can go into finance instead.

  • Career fairs allow you to narrow down or focus your options. Some of us didn’t know what we wanted to do during our secondary years, like me. I was absolutely baffled by the concept of choosing one career and I felt uneasy because it seemed I was the only one who didn’t know what I wanted to do. Going to a career fair allowed me to see what I could do if I chose a particular degree, in my case English Language. I didn’t realise that I could basically go down any career path with my degree, since language is necessary in almost every industry.

  • Career fairs allow you to meet other individuals who are on the same boat as you. Fear not, nothing is set in stone and meeting people allows you to share experiences and to take in their experiences as you go around talking to professionals and other students.

  • Career fairs allow you to find potential/future jobs and internships. Speaking to the professionals there and letting them know about your qualifications, predicted grades etc. can open doors for you in ways you didn’t know. Some professionals or employers can be so impressed by you as a package, professionally and personally, they might even hire you on the spot or at least interview you right away.

  • Career fairs allow you to get a deeper look at your industry of interest. This allows you to see who are the big shots in that industry; how their packages differ, what benefits do they provide, what salary should you expect from them, what hopes of future promotions would be available to you, etc.

There’s no point talking about how important career fairs are if we don’t give you a couple of tips on how to be prepared. So here you go:

  1. Take a hard copy of your updated CV: hand these out to people of interest as you network during the day.

  2. Look professional: ladies; go easy on the makeup, the perfume and the bling. Men; no caps, hoodies and trainers. It’s all about showing them what you would look like if you worked with them and how you would fit in professionally. Trendy is not the key here.

  3. Chew gum before the fair: if you’re going to talk to many people, make sure your breath is fresh and don’t chew gum while talking to professionals, it’s not professional at all. This is something a lot of people skip, but it really does reflect on you.

  4. Have your answers ready: rehearse answers about your experience and qualifications at home, so you’re ready to shoot them out when someone asks without feeling nervous. You don’t want to be robotic, monotone or pushy, but you most definitely want to be confident.

  5. Smile: you want others to see that you are a warm person who they would enjoy working with.

Now if this has got you motivated to go out there to find your dream job and career, then you’ll be happy to know that UBT will be holding their very own career fair this week. From the 22nd – 24th March at the Hilton Hotel- Corniche. UBT career day 2016 will be running; hosted by Prince Mishaal Bin Majed Bin Abdul Aziz – Governor of Jeddah-, so register for the event( registration is mandatory for admission), read our tips and go show them what you have to offer.

The Gulf Traffic week has returned for its 32nd run, and it’s bigger and louder than ever. “Your decision determines your destiny” is this year’s slogan, as governments, businesses and organizations work together to raise an increased level of traffic safety awareness to GCC drivers.

In KSA: “ Hizamik..Amanik” “Your Belt..Your Safety”

The community-focused Mujtama3 Jameel established the Abdul Latif Jameel Initiative for Traffic Safety and went the extra mile this year, bringing in the support of popular community figures: footballers. With the stricter laws in The kingdom, enforcing significant fines to those who fail to wear them when driving; Mujtama3 Jameel compiled a video featuring the sportsmen highlighting why they believe individuals should take extra precautions in order to insure their and others’ safety by simply taking 5 seconds to wear their safety belt.
