Let’s Go Watch a Movie!

A handy primer for planning your next movie outing.

It’s summer time! Let’s escape the heat for a couple of hours within the cool comforts of one of Bahrain’s cinemas. Here’s a quick list of tips and tricks to help you make the most it.

What to Watch

New movies are generally released on Thursdays and there are a couple of websites that give you all the details you’re looking for, including movie genres, trailers, age restrictions, timings and plot synopses.

Web: bahraincinema.com / danacinemabh.wordpress.com

Booking in Advance

The cinema will definitely be overcrowded on weekends. To make sure you have the seats you want in the movie you want, it’s always better to book your tickets online. Then all you have to do is go to one of the counters at the cinema and pick up your tickets. No fuss, no muss!

Web: cinema.bh

Comfortable Attire

The cinema can be a bit chilly, so to be on the safe side, make sure you have a cardigan or shawl with you to cover up in case you get cold.CInema_Bahrain_2016_TS-(03)

Salted or sweet popcorn, nachos and soft-drinks are all standard fare that you can pick up before entering the movie. However, in some cinemas, you may have more options. City Centre has multiple kiosks on the way to the theatre with a medley of snacks ranging from candy bars and corn to frozen yogurt and more. At Saar cinema, you can order a hotdog or crepe and even have them brought to your seat while you’re watching the movie. Bonus points for service!

Bathroom Breaks

You just had to drink that extra-large Coke during trailers, and now you’re stuck halfway through the movie because you don’t want to miss anything. Well, that’s where RunPee comes in. It’s an ingenious app that tells you the best times to sneak in a quick bathroom break without missing the best scenes. It’ll even let you know what you missed anyway. Download it now and never again have to ask, “What did
I miss?”

Stop Consuming & Start Creating!

The key ingredients to being successful on YouTube.

With over three years of intensive research under his belt and a lifetime of gaming, YouTuber and gamer Mohammed AlKhajah (aka Niflick) shared his insight into the world of professional YouTubing.

“Before thinking about the business aspect of a YouTube channel, you have to be passionate about the content you’re thinking of creating,” said Niflick. “It’s going to need a lot of research, motivation and a whole lot of work.”

According to Niflick, the top factors that will put a YouTuber on the road to success are as follows:

Connecting With Your Community

Every channel is a community. You create content to connect and engage with your community and this helps you grow on YouTube.

With gamers, commentary full of excitement and fun is what keeps that connection with their viewers. Find out what works for your area of interest and work towards it.

Before starting your channel, do your research to know the equipment you need in order to create content in your area of interest. For gamers like Niflick, the most important piece would be a game capture device.

Niflick Recommends:

  • Game capture device: Elgato HD 60

  • Computer: Strong enough to play PC games at a high FPS

  • Camcorder: Canon Vixia

  • Microphone: Blue Yeti

Technical skills

Editing: Editing style depends on personal preference. Think of the editing style you want your content to have and learn how to obtain the outcome you’re looking for. Practicing editing and learning the editing software inside and out is key to making the editing process painless.

Niflick Recommends:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CC

  • Audacity

Search Engine Optimization: YouTube uses algorithms and compiles its searches over many factors such as keywords, watch time, audience retention and engagement. The only thing a content creator can control are the keywords, be it in the title, description or tags. Learning how to write keywords are vital to being ranked well by YouTube.

Consistency: Whether you upload a video a week or two videos a day, consistency is essential. The more consistent you are, the more YouTube promotes you. In addition, you give subscribers a reason and a time to come back to your channel.

“Whatever path you choose for your channel, having fun is key,” urged Niflick. “If you’re not going to have fun through those long hard hours, you’re not going to be able to stay motivated.”

It’s not movie night without crunching and slurping.

Butter Popcorn:

There is nothing like the classic butter popcorn to get you into the aura of an authentic cinema experience.

Tip: Order in from Burrito Loco

Spicy Corn:

A spicy kick that can’t be beat and an awesome crunch that you’ll need to raise the volume to hear the movie over it.

DS Recommends: AlRifai, Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Rd.

Chips Oman:

A potato chips snack that takes residents of this region down memory lane. And if you really want a taste of nostalgia, spread some cream cheese on bread and top it with crushed Chips Oman. Yum.

Healthy snacking with a bowl of edamame beans, topped with sea salt. Shelling them is as fun as eating them.

Japanese Crackers – Seaweed:

Don’t worry; whatever you may think seaweed tastes like, this doesn’t taste like that. It’s so light and crispy, you won’t realize how much you’ve eaten until your fingers are grasping at crumbs.

Dutch Caramel Waffles (Stroopwafels or any other brand):

These caramel-filled Dutch cookies are so addictive and the best thing is that you can now indulge in their bite-sized minis.

Chocolate Chip Cookies:

Your snack spread is not complete without the original snack food: chewy chocolate chip cookies.

Mixed Nuts:

Packed with healthy oils, a handful of mixed nuts won’t just satisfy a craving, but will also keep that hunger pang in line.

Any kind will do, especially if it’s overloaded with ice cream!

Arad Bay

The beautiful Arad Bay is a great weekend getaway for those who want to enjoy nature, shopping and history.

The main landmark is Arad Fort, built in the 15th century in a similar style to Islamic forts, before the Portuguese invasion of Bahrain. Being one of the most important fortified castles of Bahrain, Arad Fort was built in a strategic location overlooking the sea passages of Muharraq Island. It was used as a defensive fortress during the 16th-19th centuries.

Just around the fort area you can find a public park, an amphitheater and Seef Mall Muharraq, home to great dining, shopping and Bahrain’s very first IMAX theatre.

The public park by the waterfront is the perfect spot to relax, have a walk or enjoy a picnic with the family. After shopping at the mall, guests can sit in a café or on the green grass of the park and sip coffee as they watch the glorious sunset.

Entrance Fee to Arad Fort: 1 BHD
