Art Jameel's 'At the Edge of Land' Exhibition Opens in Jeddah

Art Jameel, Jeddah’s well known space for art and creative communities, reveals ‘At the Edge of Land,’ a captivating group exhibition available for viewing until April 16, 2024. This exhibition delves into the intricate connections between landscapes and trade, revealing the hidden ties between geographies, resources, and commodities. ‘At the Edge of Land’ tells tales of trade routes to and from Jeddah, drawing parallels between the movement of goods and people across lands, canals, and rivers.

Hayy Arts hosts this two-floor exhibition, showcasing new commissions, loans, and important works from the Art Jameel Collection by international artists premiering in Saudi Arabia. The selected artists and artworks trace the bustling maritime pathways connecting East Asia and Europe through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.

Included in the exhibition are works by a diverse array of artists such as Jananne Al-Ani, Iosu Aramburu, Au Sow Yee, Chihoi, Bady Dalloul, Aref El Rayess, Tarek Al Ghoussein, Daniele Genadry, Ho Rui An, Hiwa K, Ranjit Kandalgaonkar, Lala Rukh, Hira Nabi, Sarker Protick, Sim Chi Yin, Joar Songcuya, You Khin, and Zarina.

‘At the Edge of Land’ embodies Art Jameel’s commitment to presenting globally significant programs that resonate with local themes. Through various artistic mediums, including multimedia, photojournalism, installations, and canvas works, the exhibition invites audiences to explore the intersection of commerce and nature, bringing about narratives of erosion and extraction between land and sea. It challenges preconceived notions of emptiness versus development, focusing on regions and communities on the trade routes.

Nora Razian, Deputy Director and Head of Exhibitions and Programmes at Art Jameel, highlighted, “This exhibition at Hayy Arts explores port cities’ unique historical roles as hubs of exchange, including Jeddah. By uniting artists worldwide, we examine the ways trade routes have shaped a distinct heritage reflected in architecture, art, and culture.”

Accompanied by a remarkable program of talks, children’s workshops at Hayy Explorers, and screenings at Hayy Cinema, ‘At the Edge of Land’ curated by Art Jameel’s Lucas Morin will be on view from November 16, 2023, to April 13, 2024. Entry is free, welcoming all enthusiasts of art and culture.
