Set in the year 1660 within the city of Japan, during the civil war period, “Shōgun” portrays a remarkable and one of a kind story. Producer Hiroyuki Sanada portrays “Lord Yoshii Toranaga,” facing a life-threatening situation as foes from the Council of Regents conspire against him. A European ship, discovered stranded in a nearby fishing village, introduces its English pilot, “John Blackthorne” (played by Cosmo Jarvis), carrying hidden knowledge that could aid Toranaga in shifting the balance of power and weakening his adversaries’ stronghold.
The destinies of Toranaga and Blackthorne become intertwined with their interpreter, “Toda Mariko” (played by Anna Sawai), a enigmatic noblewoman and the final descendant of a dishonored lineage. As she serves her lord during this tense political era, Mariko faces the challenge of balancing her new bond with Blackthorne, her loyalty to the beliefs that rescued her, and her responsibilities to her deceased father.
