The Saudi Theater and Performing Arts Commission, a key sector commission under the Ministry of Culture, proudly presented “Zarqa Al Yamama,” the nation’s first Grand Opera, in an exclusive event at London’s well known Goldsmiths’ Hall. This international production, set to premiere in Riyadh in April 2024, showcases a captivating show of local and international talents.
Led by Sultan Al-Bazie, CEO of the Theater and Performing Arts Commission, the London event presented its guests with an insightful presentation and a musical preview of Zarqa Al Yamama. The Grand Opera narrates the legend of a gifted heroine with foresight, featuring locally trained artists and international performers. The play includes advanced technology with beautiful orchestral music and one of a kind choral performances.
Al-Bazie expressed his pride in introducing Zarqa Al Yamama in London, a city globally well knwon for its arts and culture. He eagerly anticipated welcoming audiences from around the world to Riyadh in April for the opera’s premiere, hoping it will inspire more remarkable productions and contribute to the development of Saudi works.
The adaptation of Zarqa Al Yamama’s legend by Saudi writer and poet Saleh Zamanan was introduced during the event. Ivan Vukcevic, CEO of Arabian Opera, presented the opera’s musical elements. The main cast, featuring performer, mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly as Zarqa Al Yamama, along with sopranos Amelia Wawrzon and Sawsan Albahiti, presented a showstopping performance of Lee Bradshaw’s score.
The internationally known Dresdner Sinfoniker, led by conductor Pablo González, played the magnificent orchestra, accompanies by a vocal performance from the Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno. Stage director Daniele Finzi Pasca, known for his work with Cirque du Soleil and Winter Olympic ceremonies, designed the impressive staging and special effects.
By producing influential works like Zarqa Al Yamama, the Theater and Performing Arts Commission not only provides a platform for emerging talents but also sets new standards for future productions. This initiative initiates cultural exchange on the international stage, marking a huge step in the Kingdom’s opera industry development.
