“Shōgun” is a new series based on James Clavell’s popular novel, set in Japan in 1600 during a significant civil war. “Lord Yoshii Toranaga,” played by Hiroyuki Sanada, fights for survival as enemies in the Council of Regents unite against him. The discovery of a European ship and its English pilot, “John Blackthorne” (Cosmo Jarvis), brings secrets that could alter the power dynamics.
Toranaga and Blackthorne’s destinies are closely connected to their translator, “Toda Mariko” (Anna Sawai), a mysterious noblewoman and the last of a disgraced family. In the midst of a tense political situation, Mariko, while serving her lord, must balance her new friendship with Blackthorne, her dedication to the faith that helped her, and her duty to her late father.
“Shōgun” also includes an exciting Japanese cast, a first for American productions, including:
– Tadanobu Asano as “Kashigi Yabushige,” a notorious backstabber and close ally of Toranaga
– Hiroto Kanai as “Kashigi Omi,” the young leader of the fishing village where Blackthorne’s ship was found
– Takehiro Hira as “Ishido Kazunari,” a powerful bureaucrat and Toranaga’s chief rival
– Moeka Hoshi as “Usami Fuji,” a widow finding purpose amidst her lord’s fight
– Tokuma Nishioka as “Toda Hiromatsu,” Toranaga’s trusted general and closest friend
– Shinnosuke Abe as “Toda Hirokatsu” (“Buntaro”), Mariko’s jealous husband
– Yuki Kura as “Yoshii Nagakado,” Toranaga’s brash son with a strong desire to prove himself
– Yuka Kouri as “Kiku,” a renowned courtesan celebrated for her artistry throughout Japan
– Fumi Nikaido as “Ochiba no Kata,” the revered mother determined to stop Toranaga and protect her son’s power
