FX, Hulu, and James Clavell’s Estate are teaming up to expand the popular drama Shōgun. They’re planning two more seasons to continue the epic story.

The show’s main creative team, including Co-Creators and Executive Producers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, Executive Producer Michaela Clavell, and series star Hiroyuki Sanada, are all involved in the development. While production details are not finalized yet, they’re assembling a team of writers who will start working together this summer.

During its initial nine weeks, Shōgun has become FX’s most-viewed series in terms of hours streamed worldwide. All ten episodes of Shōgun’s first season, which ended on April 23, are accessible for streaming on Disney+ worldwide and on Hulu within the U.S.

In Shōgun, a modern take on James Clavell’s famous novel, the action unfolds in 1600s Japan during a significant civil conflict. Hiroyuki Sanada shines as “Lord Yoshii Toranaga,” facing fierce opposition from the Council of Regents. When a mysterious European ship and its English pilot “John Blackthorne” (Cosmo Jarvis) arrive, secrets emerge that could alter Toranaga’s destiny. As Blackthorne navigates intricate alliances and faces foes like Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants, Mariko (Anna Sawai), Toranaga’s translator, adds complexity with her background and struggles between loyalty, faith, and family.

Shōgun features an acclaimed Japanese cast, unprecedented for an American production, including Tadanobu Asano as “Kashigi Yabushige,” a notorious backstabber and close ally of Toranaga; Hiroto Kanai as “Kashigi Omi,” the young leader of the fishing village where Blackthorne’s ship was found; Takehiro Hira as “Ishido Kazunari,” a powerful bureaucrat who is Toranaga’s chief rival; Moeka Hoshi as “Usami Fuji,” a widow who must find new purpose amidst her lord’s fight; Tokuma Nishioka as “Toda Hiromatsu,” Toranaga’s trusted general and closest friend; Shinnosuke Abe as “Toda Hirokatsu” (“Buntaro”), Mariko’s jealous husband; Yuki Kura as “Yoshii Nagakado,” the brash son of Toranaga with a strong desire to prove himself; Yuka Kouri as “Kiku,” a courtesan renowned for her artistry throughout Japan; and Fumi Nikaido as “Ochiba no Kata,” the revered mother of the heir who will stop at nothing to put an end to Toranaga and his threat to her son’s power.

Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks teamed up to bring Shōgun to television, with Marks taking on the role of Showrunner and Executive Producer. Joining them are Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca, and Kondo as producers. The series is produced by FX Productions.
