“Norah,” a leading film that talks about and showcases Saudi Arabia in the 1990s, has received recognition in the Un Certain Regard category at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, which is scheduled from May 14 to 25, 2024. This moment marks the first Saudi movie, filmed in AlUla with an entirely Saudi cast, to secure and earn a place at this esteemed global event.
The movie focuses on Norah’s story, a young woman who has lost her parents and has a strong desire for self-expression. She experiences a huge change when she encounters Nader, an artist and the new teacher in her village. The importance of human connection and the determination to pursue a career in the creative and art field, is showcased through their shared experiences which are driven by their creative ambitions.
Directed, written, and produced by Tawfik Alzaidi, “Norah” stars actors Yaqoub Alfarhan, Maria Bahrawi, and Abdullah Alsadhan, with over 40% of the crew being Saudis. This reflects Film AlUla’s support for local talent and telling Saudi stories authentically. “Norah” at Cannes highlights Saudi cinema’s unique charm and universal appeal, narrating the Saudi life in a historic setting
After its debut at the Red Sea International Film Festival in December 2023, where it was honored with the Best Saudi Film Award, “Norah” has been receiving widespread praise, marking a major milestone for Saudi cinema on the global platform.
