Noha Raheem’s journey with Arabic calligraphy began in her early childhood, when she was drawn to the intricate structure and architectural elegance of square Kufic script. This fascination blossomed from her deep appreciation for the artistry of freestyle calligraphy.
Today, Noha stands out as a remarkable artist who masterfully blends the traditional art of Arabic calligraphy with the elegance of Japanese Kanji, along with other freestyle calligraphy techniques creating a unique fusion that captures the beauty of the art forms.
Could you tell us about your unique art form?
When I was young, I admired Arabic calligraphy, especially square Kufic. I started exploring it in my first year of studying interior design because both are architectural. Later, I discovered Arabic infused with Kanji through Haji Noor Deen, who blended the two styles beautifully. Inspired by his work which led me to develop my unique approach to calligraphy.
What is your source of inspiration?
I have so many sources of inspiration for my quotes, from Arabic proverbs to poetry to the Quran and emotions. Emotions speak to me; they give me motivation.
What is your advice to those just starting out in the field?
My advice to the younger generation who are passionate about Arabic calligraphy is to be consistent. Always have a pen or a brush with you, and whenever you have free time, write your name or anything you see in front of you. Keep practicing daily, even for a minute or two minutes maximum, and this will take you far in the future.
What are some of your favorite things to do in Riyadh during summer?
For me, especially in summer, I love going to self-care services. I love going to spas, and doing my nails; these treatments I find very useful in summer, especially to bond with my friends.
What are some of the spots you recommend to visit in Riyadh?
Riyadh is absolutely blooming even in Summer, I recommend social gatherings and workshops in AlMashtal. Another good place for workshops is Sima Space. Also, if you want to attend a live recording of a podcast, you can go to The Stage, and if you want to attend live talks, you can go to The Clear Hub.
