Assouline, a top luxury publisher, has revealed  ‘AlUla Flora’, a new masterpiece highlighting the rich variety of plant life thriving in the historic oasis city of AlUla, situated in northwest Saudi Arabia.

‘AlUla Flora’, a new addition to Assouline’s Classics Collection, showcases writings by Abdulaziz Assaeed, a professor of rangeland ecology at King Saud University, complemented by stunning photography from Saudi talent Hayat Osamah. The book consists of  artwork contributed by Carolyn Jenkins, Lil Sire, Raxenne, Moira Frith, and Mary Woodin, offering a vibrant exploration of AlUla’s botanical wonders.

After the acclaim of ‘AlUla Ever’ last year, which explored the region’s geological marvels, cultural heritage, and vibrant arts, ‘AlUla Flora’ now guides readers through the city’s green landscapes. This book showcases more than 80 plant species thriving in AlUla, spanning rocky sandstone formations, expansive desert plains, and lush oases brimming with natural springs.

Highlighted flora includes the vivid Hispid Viper’s Bugloss with its bright, funnel-shaped flowers, the striking Spiny Milkvetch adorned in pinkish-purple blooms, and the culturally revered jujube tree. Each plant is showcased not just for its ecological importance but also for its deep-rooted significance in local traditions, spanning Bedouin craftsmanship to ancient culinary practices.

Phillip Jones, Chief Tourism Officer at the Royal Commission for AlUla, articulates the vision of the book: “’AlUla Flora’ opens a window to the city’s fascinating botanical world, which we have been carefully and intentionally nurturing to rebuild and reinforce the ecological richness and vibrancy of the region. The book acts as a visual narrative of our broader aspirations to protect and showcase the verdant life in AlUla, inviting visitors and locals to discover more about the environment that we live in and create an all-important connection with nature.”

The book takes readers on a visual tour of AlUla’s lesser-known plant life while educating about ongoing conservation efforts. These initiatives highlight AlUla’s dedication to sustainability and ecotourism, aiming to enhance the well-being of both locals and visitors while preserving native plants for future generations.

An oasis teeming with life

The release of ‘AlUla Flora’ showcases the destination’s commitment to protecting its environment. Over 50% of AlUla’s area is designated as protected nature reserves, such as Sharaan, Wadi Nakhlah, Gharameel, Harrat Uwayrid, Harrat AlZabin, and Harrat Khaybar.

Central to AlUla’s goals is the revival of its land and ecological legacy by reintroducing crucial native plant and animal species that thrived there historically. Launched in 2023, the animal reintroduction initiative has successfully released approximately 1,000 animals from four species—Arabian gazelles, Sand gazelles, Arabian oryx, and Nubian ibex.
