A chance for travelling enthusiasts to study while on a cruise around the world!
Semester at Sea aims to provide students with an opportunity of a lifetime to take a semester aboard a cruise ship that goes on voyages around different parts of the world for a period of 2-3 months. With a spring and fall semester, the ship goes to sea in September and in January along different routes such as Europe, The Americas, East Asia, Northeast Africa etc.
This cruise is available for students in undergrad, gap year, post-grad and even high school depending on the case of the specific student. Students can take courses to complete their credit requirements for their original universities by getting those credits transferred. In addition to world class professors and classroom learning, Semester at Sea allows students to experience in-field learning on location when the ship takes harbor in a country. Not only does this give students a chance to explore the place but learn in detail about the respective field of study in that location. Semester at Sea also provides scholarship opportunities in terms of merit, work-based and alumni support scholarships based on your requirements.
Yasmeen Mujahid, a Dar Al Hekma University alumnus, took on this opportunity in her senior year and this is what she had to say, “Semester at Sea provides an exceptional education platform where not only you learn about new cultures, religions, and societies, but you also have the chance to apply what you learn directly in the real world through the countries that you visit. Semester at Sea has given me a light of knowledge in my mind and the world in my hands. The people I’ve encountered, whether on the ship or in the countries, and the experiences that I’ve had in each one are absolutely priceless. It really taught me that although the world is vast and different, in one way or another the human beings living in it are the same.”
SAS holds an academic partnership with the University of Virginia, one of the most prestigious universities in the United States. Some of the courses offered by the on-board university are from disciplines such as social sciences, art and design, humanities, commerce, natural sciences, media sciences and law.
So if you’d like to have an experience of a lifetime by learning and travelling at the same time, all you need to do is go to their official website, pick a voyage, start an application and you’re ready to go!
