Originally written by Al-Banawi herself, “Basma” follows the emotional journey of a young Saudi woman who comes back to her hometown, Jeddah, after studying in America. She soon uncovers family secrets that were kept hidden from her and faces the reality of her father’s declining mental health. Despite her efforts to support him, she becomes the target of his occasional outbursts, making her homecoming even more challenging. Alongside these family struggles, Basma also navigates challenges in her love life, adding to the complexity of her journey to reconcile with her family.

Al-Banawi, as both writer and director, brings attention to the balance between family responsibilities, personal development, and mental health complexities.
