The Brew Crew: Riyadh's Coffee Roasters on the Rise

The Brew Crew: Riyadh's Coffee Roasters on the Rise
The heroes behind the cure for our morning blues.

Elixir Bunn

What got you interested in coffee?
Curiosity and adventure to push the limit of coffee options in the market. In my first work experience, I used to get sleepy after lunch and coffee was my answer. The coffee capsule trend just caught on. All the capsules have tasted the same to me. Later we’ve learned that specialty coffee is different, and full of natural flavors and is actually made with just enough love and care. This revelation was the seed of our growing passion in specialty coffee industry.

If you had to choose between Nespresso and Starbucks, which of the evils would you go with?
We would go with Starbucks tea offerings. Duah!

One thing you’d add to your roaster if you had infinite funds?
We would invest and buy a couple of farms, bring more and more of coffee scoring 90+ and making the coffee producers, competitors and winners of cup of excellence coffees to be the new norm.

What got you interested in coffee?
At first, we were leisure coffee drinkers. Each one of us traveled to different places and discovered the variations in coffee tastes, coffee shop atmospheres and services. We all had different experiences, which we enjoyed, but did not find the right shop in Saudi. So we decided to research what makes a cup of coffee great and began our small roasting efforts till we were able to achieve what we think is delicious and fresh coffee. Then we decided to share our passionate of coffee with everyone by opening our coffee shop.

If you had to choose between Nespresso and Starbucks, which of the evils would you go with?
Starbucks, because they started a good initiative for coffee plantation owners.

One thing you’d add to your roaster if you had infinite funds?
A dragon.

The Roasting House

What got you interested in coffee?
For me, coffee was a bitter and unpleasant drink until one day my mother took me to a small café and ordered a cappuccino for me, which was prepared according to the best barista standards. The foam was creamy and velvety, naturally sweet, and it blended well with the bold espresso crema. This made me realize that coffee could actually taste better. Since then, I’d self-taught myself on coffee preparation methods, milk steaming techniques, pulling the perfect espresso shots, and experimented with different coffee beans. As I was living in London I had access to a large variety of freshly roasted coffees, specialty cafes, and roasteries, so this helped a lot. The journey began from there and I never looked back.

If you had to choose between Nespresso and Starbucks, which of the evils would you go with?
If I absolutely must, I’d go for Nespresso, as Starbucks’ coffee is too dark roasted to have any flavours left.

One thing you’d add to your roaster if you had infinite funds?
An education center that flies in experts from all over the world throughout the year.
