Riyadh road expansion plan announced

Turn on your engines, it is time to hit the road.

The Saudi capital is getting a massive facelift with the Riyadh road expansion plan.

Introduced by The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), the mega project is part of the Ring Road Axes development program. The additions will change the way you move around the city.

It will be rolled out in phases with phase one focusing on the main and ring roads of the capital. It will have a budget of SAR13 billion.

So get ready to cruise down the streets of Riyadh. Here is everything about the expansion plan.

Riyadh road expansion

The goal of the city’s new roads program is to modernize Riyadh’s main and ring roads in order to enhance connection between its various regions and the city’s overall transportation system.

In keeping with Vision 2030, the project will carry on the legacy of transforming the Saudi capital into a major international city.

The first phase of the expansion is made up of four main projects,

Second Southern Ring Road
From the new Al Kharj Road in the east to Jeddah Road in the west, the Second Southern Ring Road will be built over a distance of 56 kilometers. There will be 32 bridges, 10 major crossroads, three service roads in each direction, and four lanes for the main route in each direction.

Two parallel bridges
These bridges, which span a 4-kilometer segment of the Western Ring Road at its connection with Jeddah Road, will be built beside the current Wadi Laban suspension bridge. Between the Jeddah Road intersection and the Western Ring Road, there will be an additional four bridges built.

Thumamah Road Axis
This 6-kilometer stretch will go from King Khalid Road in the west to King Fahd Road in the east and will take place on the western portion of the Thumamah Road Axis.

Taif Road
The final project in the first phase is the 16-kilometer stretch of Taif Road from the western end of Laban’s Taif Road to the Qiddiya project in the Qiddiya neighborhood.

Ring Roads Axes Development Program

The program, which was started in 2019, aims to improve approximately 500 kilometers of roadways in Riyadh. This includes building new roads, modernizing existing major routes and improving connections all around the city.

The project, which is intended to help both locals and tourists, intends to improve access to major urban developments, improve traffic flow, raise average driving speeds, shorten travel times, and improve quality of life in the urban, economic, cultural, environmental and tourism sectors.

More haps in Riyadh

Riyadh recently introduced a brand-new parking initiative to reduce congestion in the city. The capital is set to close out the year with some big events like Riyadh Season 2024, the high-octane Latino Night fight, MDLBEAST Soundstorm and more. Wondering where to go this weekend? Bujairi Terrace is now doing tickets for SAR50 after 5pm.
