From the phone in our hands to the tiny bolt fixed under our chairs, such bestowments of Allah (Glory Be to Him) go unappreciated and taken for granted. We lack the khushu’ in our prayers. We don’t cry when the ayahs of the Qur’an are being recited. We don’t feel the Love for Allah more than our love for our parents. What is the crucial element that is required for the perfection in our Love and Ibadah?
Love and respect comes from knowing a being very well, knowing the perfect qualities. For every type of obedience there is love and respect as a prerequisite. With regards to Allah, if we truly want to give Allah His rights (of worshipping Him) then acknowledging Allah’s names and attributes to know Him is the best method. The Qur’an and authentic Sunnah are the two sources for learning these.
“The most beautiful Names are for Allah, so call on Him by them, but shun those who deny His Names” (Qur’an 7:180)
The early scholars have categorized the study of Allah’s names and attributes under the banner of ‘Tawheed Asma wa Sifaat’. It is one of the refined studies from which many branches of studies emerge; a study in which every Muslim should qualify.
For further understanding on how the names and attributes deepen the love and respect for Allah, Ibn Qayyim (may Allah have Mercy on him) said regarding the Name “Allah”:
Ibn al-Qayyim concluded ten qualities of this name saying: “When among His creation the most knowledgeable person, (meaning Prophet (peace be upon him)) while in sujood (prostration) himself said, “Allah! I cannot praise You enough, You are as You have praised yourself.” Then who else can do it? The keeper of this name is a source of perfection, praise, admiration, greatness, glory, generosity, respect, every good, every kindness and every grace. This name, when remembered during fear, sadness and hardship one feels relieved…Through this name, bad things became distant and good deed are acquired.” (At-Tayseer Al-Azeez Al-Hameed, 30)
Every Name of Allah is free from any kind of imperfection and is Beautiful. Though we do not possess the knowledge in its full quantity, it assists us in every step of life – be it in materialistic gain or to achieve Paradise.
