A Riyadh Metro Red Line to Diriyah expansion has just been confirmed.
First reported by Saudi Gazette, the extension’s contract award has also been awarded by the Royal Commission of Riyadh City (RCRC).
The project will add a whopping 8.4 kilometers to the existing Red Line, allowing you to go past the King Saud University station.
The metro recently announced the free park and ride service, making getting around the capital city more accessible with each passing day.

Part of the larger King Abdulaziz Project for Riyadh Public transport, the metro network of the Saudi capital city was inaugurated with six lines, 80 metro stations, 2,860 bus routes, and 842 buses back in December 2024. The system has since then expanded massively including a brand-new line which was announced in December of 2025.
The transportation network recently introduced student prices and year-round tickets.

Currently the Red Line begins at the King Fahad Sports City and runs all the way to King Saud University. Following the extension, the line will go past King Saud University to the Diriyah Gate Development Project. A massive five-station expansion has been planned.

The new extension is taking shape both above and below ground, with 7.1km of deep underground tunnels, 1.3km of elevated tracks, and a set of brand-new stations designed to keep the city moving smoothly. It’s a major upgrade that blends smart engineering with seamless connectivity.
Two stations will serve King Saud University, one dedicated to the medical city and health colleges, and another at the main university concourse, while Diriyah gains three new stations of its own. One of these is already planned as a future interchange with Line 7, setting the stage for even easier travel ahead.
Impact on travel times to Diriyah

With the expanded network in place, getting around the city just got a whole lot faster. Expect to reach Diriyah from STC station in under 15 minutes, or arrive from KAFD in less than 20. Even longer journeys, from King Fahd Sports City or Qasr Al Hokm, will be noticeably quicker.
