The name Uhud comes from an Arabic term that means one. Mount Uhud was given this name because it is separate from all the other mountains. It was believed in the past that a giant man named Uhud took the mountain as his place, and that is why it was given this name.

The mountain witnessed one of the most influential battles in the history of Islam, the Battle of Uhud, in which the Muslims were defeated against the infidels of Quraish. Mount Uhud witnessed the martyrdom of many of the Prophet’s loved ones in the battle, and the Prophet referred to it as an example of greatness.

The Messenger Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, lost a large number of his companions in the Battle of Mount Uhud, including his uncle Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib and Musab bin Umair, and The mountain became a grave for 70 companions who were martyred in defense of Islam.

When the Muslim immigrants left for Medina to unite with its people, the Ansar, they faced the infidels of Quraish in the Battle of Badr, the first battle led by the Messenger against the infidels, which the Muslims were victorious, leading to another battle at Mount Uhud in the third year of the Hijra.

The infidel army, consisting of 3,000 soldiers, faced the Muslims, consisting of 700 soldiers at Uhud the second battle in the history of Islam, and it resulted in the defeat of the Muslims as a result of some archers disobeying the Messenger’s orders. Khalid bin Al-Walid took advantage of the disobedience and circled the mountain to besiege the Muslims from all sides, which resulted in their defeat and withdrawal.

Mount Uhud Hadith

The mountain is considered the cemetery of martyrs and was mentioned in many hadiths as Anas bin Malik narrated on the authority of the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, after the Battle of Mount Uhud, that he said: “This is a mountain that loves us and we love it. O, God, Abraham made Mecca sacred and I made what is between these two mountains sacred.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari 4084)

The mountain is located north of Medina, Saudi Arabia, about four kilometers north of the Prophet’s Mosque. It extends from east to west and leans north.
