The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) has formally opened an evocative exhibition entitled ‘Echoes of the Familiar’. Aimed to showcase the concept of “home” in the Saudi society through the lens of several artists, the exhibit presents different themes on tradition, customs, and memory. The powerful display of art using different media is arranged across a series of spaces in a Saudi home, enabling visitors to not only explore but also absorb meaningful stories.

Curated by Saudi curator Gaida AlMogren, the exhibition gives a glimpse of the prominent elements that define Saudi life – family rituals, shared meals, and leisure time. Composed of 28 works, including 17 new commissions by 28 Saudi artists, contemporary designs filled with impactful narratives abound in one of Ithra’s galleries now.

The fusion of traditional and modern art is evident in the stories embedded in each mounted display, evoking a diverse spectrum of thoughts and emotions. The exhibit depicts a traditional Saudi home through seven themed sections: The Outside, The Entrance, The Living Room, the Kitchen, The Hall of memories, The Bedroom, and The People. Each space artistically portrays every day life in a Saudi home through the years, and how a distinct cultural identity was formed through mundane activities and conversational pieces.

The exhibition is expected to promote the intergenerational dialogue through an interactive experience narrated by stories and tales.
