Welcome to the Saudi Pro League, Núñez!

The Saudi football scene has been making headlines with high-profile transfers and acquisitions.

After Al Nassr’s retainment of Ronaldo until 2027, it was announced that Al-Kholood has just become the first-foreign owned SPL club. Now, another team has joined the buzz as Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez transfers to Al Hilal.

The Uruguayan footballer and the Saudi Pro League had been in talks for some time and negotiations were cemented in early August as Liverpool released Núñez from his contract.

The premier league team has allowed the 26-year old to finalize his contract and undergo medical assessment for his Saudi debut.

Darwin Núñez, Uruguay’s striking sensation, has had quite the football journey. Kicking things off at Peñarol’s youth academy, he broke into the first team in 2017 before heading to Spain’s Almería in 2019 for a club-record fee. Benfica came calling in 2020, snapping him up for €24 million, the biggest signing in Portuguese football history. He repaid them in style, bagging 26 goals in 28 games in his second season, earning top scorer, Player of the Year, and a spot in the Team of the Year. Liverpool then swooped in with a €75 million deal in 2022, where he went on to lift the 2024–25 Premier League trophy.
